Dear mr larry stark. I know that there was you or a representive of theater mirror at the last days of judas iscariot by wax wings productions. As hard as the company tried we could not get any press there. I wonder way youre publication bothered to print no review. Giving us no posterity good or bad

LARRY STARK REPLIES:

Well, all I can say is --- you're dead right. I am nothing but a freeloading deadbeat giving nothing back to the companies and actors who give me free tickets in exchange for publicity. I'm not at all proud of my sloth, but there it is. In this entire year I've only written about three or four plays:

To Tom Garvey **** "On Ego" till 15 April & "The Andersen Project" till 1 April from Larry Stark
"Red" A Review by Larry Stark
"Copenhagen" A Review by Larry Stark
"Uncle Vanya" A Review by Larry Stark

What weighs on my conscience is that I try to take my job as a reviewer as seriously as you take yours; I like to think that what I say in reviews is actually Worth Reading --- and that takes a little time. Not just the mere typing-time, but the time to do a little actual Thinking about what ought to be said. And if, as most other reviewers do, I saw and wrote of only two or three plays each week, I'd have the time.
But, well, I look back over just the month of March, and this is where I've been and what I've seen:

So there's very little time Between Plays for that serious thinking --- to say nothing of trying to list every play you can see in Massachusetts, or doing the HaTeMaiL-codes on all thereviews other, more conscientious reviewers send me, or trying to answer e-mails such as yours.

All I can really offer a company, or an actor, these days, is my once-a-year nominations and votes as one of the Independent Reviewers of New England.

And, for that, I do try to keep a list of "memorables" --- each one of which probably deserves two or three screens-worth of serious, insightful review. This list, more and more, creeps up every year to one third to one half of the plays I see.

And, of course, I understand that the only reason anyone goes on-stage anywhere is to be, even in some small way, Famous. So I do feel considerable guilt for not fulfilling my part of the bargain.

I hope you understand.

Love,
